The museum was founded in 1986 in an old bank building, built at the beginning of the 20th century. Today, the museum displays about 8,000 paintings, which include the works of about 40 contemporary artists. The museum exhibits are thematically divided into several collections: Ukrainian paintings of the late 19th – early 20th century, 1920s – early 1980s, the second half of the 1980s – early 2000s, paintings by foreign artists, artists from Khmelnytskyi and other collections.
